(ANS – Santander) – On Saturday 4 June a new parish church of “Our Lady of Mount Carmel” was opened at Nueva Montaña, near Santander, in the Spain-Bilbao Province at which Bishop Vicente Jiménez of Santander presided.

Concelebrating with the Bishop were Fr Manuel Herrero, Vicar General, Fr Felix Urra Mendía, Provincial of Spain-Bilbao, the Salesian parish priest  Fr Jesús Arce and many other priests, Salesians and diocesan. Also present at the Mass were the Mayor of Santander, the Hon. Iñigo de la Serna, and the architect of the new church, Jaime Carceller and a large number of the faithful who filled the church.

The ceremony began with the blessing of holy water and the aspersion followed by the reading of  the prayer dedication and the anointings of the altars and the walls of the building. Finally the Blessed Sacrament was placed in its chapel.

In his homily Bishop Jiménez said: “As Father and Shepherd, I offer a very warm greeting to the parish community of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, to the parish Council, to all the religious and lay faithful. Your parish-priest is the Salesian Community, which following the charism of Don Bosco and with love for Mary Help of Christians in taking care of the parish, is a living memorial of the transformation which has taken place in the Nueva Montaña district where they undertake a joyful and demanding task: that of building the real Church made of ‘living stones’, taking on the responsibility of making the parish a school communion and a home for all.”

The new church is 1,100 square metres and retains some of the features of the old church which was demolished in 2005, as well as new symbols of unity, characteristic of the modern new building. There are two altars: the high altar for the major celebrations and a smaller one, behind which has been placed the altar frontal from the old church to remind the parishioners of the previous building.

On a number of occasions Fr Arce emphasised that “we have a new and distinctive church and we want it to continue to be a place where we give a message of life and hope for the XXI century.”
