(ANS – Munich) – On 18-20 October 2013 the Salesianum in Munich hosted DBYN’s youth conference ‘Generations of Participation’ focused on “Assisting young citizens in N.E.E.T.”. It focused on creating strategies and projects to care for young people who are not in education, not in employment and not in training.

“N.E.E.T.” is a group of young people which was formed as a response to the European crisis. It brings together a variety of young people who have problems accessing the labour market.  As well as those who are “conventionally unemployed”, it also refers to young people who are unavailable for the labour market (as caregivers), those who are unemployed due to marginalisation, young people who are waiting for better opportunities to access the labour market, and young people who are voluntarily not in the labour market because they have chosen to focus on the arts or to travel.

There were three sessions with inputs from experts. The first focused on the Oratory in Valladolid where the youth centre has started up educational services to improve the capacity of unemployed young people to access the labour market, or even to create their own micro-companies.  The young people then visited Don Bosco Waldwinkel, an educational complex offering vocational training for disadvantaged youth. And finally there was an input from Salesian Teenage Care Dublin, which offers services and housing to disadvantaged youth. After the inputs of these experts DBYN member organisations started developing concrete projects and strategies, steering the network towards catering for N.E.E.T.s.

This seminar was the last in a series of three in which DBYN tried to explore ways of being involved in this particular field of youth work. The previous meetings were “Don Bosco Here and Now” (Logroño, October 2012) and “No work and All play” (Berlin, March 2013).
