“It is a mark of esteem and appreciation by the Holy Father for the Salesian Family and cause for joy by the Salesian Congregation,” the Rector Major said giving the news to the members of the General Council at the end of this morning’s session of the Council. The Councillors expressed their joy and offered their congratulations to Fr Scaramussa with best wishes for a fruitful apostolate.
Fr Scaramussa, born at Prosperidade on 19 September 1950, made his novitiate at Jaboatão and took his first vows on 31 January 1969. After studies in Philosophy, Theology and Pedagogy with specialisation in Educational Guidance, he was ordained deacon at Jaciguà on 6 June 1977 and priest at Prosperidade on 11 December 1977.
In the Province of Belo Horizonte he was a teacher, Rector, and parish priest, Provincial Councillor, Delegate for the Salesian Cooperators, Vice Provincial and Delegate for Youth Ministry. In December 1996 he became Provincial of Belo Horizonte.
At national level, he chaired the Youth Ministry Team and was President of Provincials’ Conference of Brazil (CISBRASIL). In the local Church he was Chair of the Team for Basic Communities (CEBS), in the diocese of Cachoeiro de Itapamirim. In addition for ten year he was Director of the Regional Institute for Catechetics of the National Conference of the Bishops of Brazil East II.
In the Conference of Religious in Brazil (CBR) he was a member of the reflection group on Education and took part in the East II Regional Committee. He published a book on the Preventive System of Don Bosco and a number of articles in magazines and aids on the same topic.
During the 25th General Chapter in 2002, he was elected Councillor for Social Communication. The date of his ordination will probably be 19 April.
