27/2/2015 - Spain - Responding to the Crisis in Europe

(ANS - Barcelona) – Twenty-five Provincial Economers from the Salesian Regions of the Mediterranean and Central and Northern Europe, together with the Economer General, Bro. Jean Paul Muller from Rome, and his staff, gathered in the Salesian House of Martí-Codolar, Barcelona, from 21 to 24 February.  It was the first joint meeting of the Provincial Economers of the two Salesian Regions of Europe. The objective was to look for ways of collaboration in an increasingly global economy.

by Xavier Costa

Bro. Muller said: "At the recent General Chapter it was decided that we must go forward together, looking for better ways of collaboration. What we are doing here is a response to the crisis in Europe and the world. For example, the young people in Spain are not only those who are born here, and the same is true in France and elsewhere in Europe. This means that we as Economers must see how we can use our money to support young people from all over the world, because we live in a global world.

A euro received in Germany can be used to help young immigrants in Lampedusa. A pound collected in the UK can be invested in training young people in the country, who perhaps in the future will go to Mozambique to give professional training to local youth."

Fr Antonio Echeto, Economer of the Mary Help of Christians Province in Spain, clarified that one of the strengths of the meeting was the implementation of the decisions of GC27 on issues of administration and economy, at the level of Congregation, Province and Community.  "We discussed the deliberations of GC27 on administrative and economic issues, and also the policy of the Congregation regarding those who are working in the service of the poor and needy, encouraging communities to live in ever greater simplicity and make good use of available resources."

There was also discussion on the letter Guidelines for the Management of Assets in the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life from the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.
