(ANS - San Salvador) - The quality of the educational programmes of  Don Bosco University (UDB) has once again been recognized by the Central American Accreditation for Courses in Architecture and Engineering (ACAAI), through the credit awarded, for the second time, to the course in Biomedical Engineering.

by Erika Vanessa Mendez

Accreditation was granted for five years. It is recognition of the high standards of this course of study, taking into account aspects such as the curriculum, the process of teaching and learning, research and technological advances, and the physical and technological infrastructure that integrate the practical skills of students and specialized teachers.

This recognition becomes an important point of reference in all the activities of UDB for its continuous improvement and the pursuit of its main objective: to provide an educational programme that includes the professional skills of the students and contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.

Don Bosco University is the only institution of higher education in El Salvador that offers this study programme which trains professionals in the design, analysis and management of the different technologies and systems that contribute, from an engineering perspective, to improvement in  medical applications.

To date, 191 students have graduated as biomedical engineers and many have already distinguished themselves, inside and outside the country. Currently about twenty professionals in this sector are employed directly in important companies in the biomedical sector or as consultants in countries like Germany, United States, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, Guatemala and other Latin American countries.

66% of the professional graduates of the course work in the private health sector. Some are developing support activities for biomedical engineering technologies that are then marketed. Others are serving as consultants for the acquisition of medical technologies, or developing business management technologies. Another group of biomedical engineers are completing their studies through Master’s and PhD programmes in Japan, Spain and Germany.

The credit given to this course is in addition to others that ACAAI had already given to the courses of Computer Engineering, Automation Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering and the Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design.
