Bangladesh – Flood leaves thousands marooned |
(ANS – Guwahati) – Responding to last week’s floods that ravaged several villages in Assam, Don Bosco University students and faculty are sacrificing their 10-day puja vacation to help with relief and rehabilitation for flood victims.
They have formed three teams under the leadership of Social Work Department, head Dr Riju Sharma. While two teams swung into action to mobilize relief by way of food, clothes and medicine, and rehabilitation materials from Shillong and Guwahati, a third team has gone to the field camps with faculty member Mr Victor Nazary.
Earlier on Sunday (28 Sept) a team consisting of Fr Jose Karipadam and students visited the village to assess the situation. On Monday (29 Sept) they mobilized university authorities, faculty and students, even though the university is closed for the puja holidays since Saturday, 27 September.
“A ten-member (all boys) flood relief team from ADBU set out today (Tuesday, 30 Sept 2014) to bring relief and help with the rehabilitation of the people of Garo bustee at Hahim, in the Boko Circle, of rural Kamrup district, some 65 kms away from the university,” says team leader and faculty member Mr Victor Nazary.
From the first information report from the Hahim area it is gathered that twelve houses have been wiped out with the fury of the flood waters. Scores of other houses were damaged, standing crops, livestock and property lost.
“Any help by way of relief materials and volunteer force to assist with physical help to help construction of shelters, most welcome,” says Mr Nazary.
