20/8/2015 - Sierra Leone - Don Bosco Fambul: three gifts for Don Bosco’s Birthday

(ANS – Freetown) –In the context of the celebrations of Don Bosco’s Bicentenary, the Salesians, the team and the beneficiaries of Don Bosco Fambul house in Freetown, of the Province of Western Anglophone Africa, presented very particular gifts for the birthday of the Saint of the Youth: the release of detainees, the award of diplomas for young women and the reintegration of street children in their families.

“I am sure that Don Bosco has greatly appreciated these gifts on hid birthday”, declared the Rector of Don Bosco Fambul, the Salesian lay-brother Lothar Wagner, during the press conference he held at the beginning of the celebrations.

Every day Don Bosco Fambul takes care of the young and of sick detainees in the prison of “Pademba”. Through meetings with the minister of justice, the social workers of the prison are trying to obtain the release of 79 detainees within next August 31st. Many of these inmates have been waiting for their trial for over three years now, while they are being detained for minor crimes for which only a few months’ custody is foreseen. Salesians are trying to see to it that their rights be respected.

The only reception centre in Sierra Leone for young girls and women who were victims of violence is the Laura Vicuña Shelter in Freetown. There, in the last years, over one thousand little girls and adolescents found shelter and security. 142 young women could successfully complete their formation courses on professional skills, obtaining their diploma. The award of diplomas ceremony was presided over by Fr. Américo Chaquisse, Regional Councillor for Africa- Madagascar, and by representatives of the government.

The great celebration reached its peak on August 16th, with the street children who will be reintegrated in their families. “The children and the young wanted to bring their songs, their talents and other gifts to Don Bosco”, said Bro. Wagner.

After consultations and regular visits to their families, many street children are ready to return to their homes with the support of social workers.
