There are about 90 Salesians in the Retreat House of Lo Cañas, representatives of the 11 Provinces in the Region. For the first time at the Team Visit the 6 Provinces of Brazil have joined the other Spanish –speaking Provinces in the southern part of the American continent.
Accompanying the Rector Major Fr Pascual Chávez are some of the members of the General Council: the Vicar General, Fr Adriano Bregolin, the Economer General Bro Jean Paul Muller, the Councillors for Youth Ministry the Missions and Formation, Fr Fabio Attard, Fr Václav Klement and Fr Francesco Cereda, and the Councillor for the America South Cone Region, Fr Natale Vitali.
Yesterday morning proceedings began with Mass at which Fr Chávez presided and Fr Bregolin gave the homily, and a welcome from the Provincial of Chile Fr Leonardo Santibáñez.
In addition to the aims of all the Team Visits – an analysis of progress made since the 26th General Chapter, and consideration of the future prospects of each of the Provinces – some of the topics specific to the America South Cone Region are: the primacy of God and the charismatic identity I the new context of Latin-America, rethinking the approach to Youth Ministry and Vocation Ministry, and fidelity, formation and interprovince cooperation.
The America South Cone Region with its 11 Province has about 1560 Salesians. It was to this part of the world that Don Bosco first turned sending his Salesians as missionaries to Patagonia. It was also in the Region that saintly figures such as Ceferino Namuncurà, Laura Vicuña, and Bro Artemides Zatti flourished.
