Argentina – First “Assembly of Brothers” in the “Blessed Artemides Zatti” Province |
As part of the celebrations several gifts were presented: to the authorities, to various Departments of the centre, to the Salesian Family and to the descendents of Mr Angel Zerda, who 100 years ago gave the land and the central building for the house.
Fr Cayo gave the community a picture of Saint Francis Solano, Patron of the Institute, and after having expressed his personal thanks, read the message of the Rector Major. The Provincial highlighted several passages in the message of Fr Chávez,: “with joy I join in the celebrations for your centenary. I rejoice and I congratulate you for the glorious past in that most Salesian city of Salta, where on 9 March 1911, four Salesians arrived accompanied by Fr Joseph Vespignani, Provincial of Argentina”.
“We recall the glorious past but we celebrate the rich quality of the present,” the Rector Major’s message continues. – “As the result of the strong desire of the Salesian Congregation to find at any time the appropriate response to the educational needs of the young, the work has changed and expanded. Today the Salesian presence in Salta is very encouraging: the “Angel Zerda” Salesian Institute, the “Ceferino Namuncurá” School and an associate parish, offering a high quality of educational and pastoral services; and then the Salesian Youth Movement with its vitality and the Salesian Family conscious of its identity and enthusiastic. God has been with us. And now we celebrate what He has done.”
Actively taking part in all the events planned for the opening of the centenary were representatives of the local Salesian Family and of about thirty schools in Salta; members of the Salesian Youth Movement, students from the “Ceferino Namuncurá” School and the associate parish; and a thousand students from the Institute with their families and teachers.
Archbishop Cargnello then blessed a commemorative centenary plaque, placed at the centre of the main corridor of the Institute. In the evening, in the School Chapel, full of people Fr Cayo presided at a solemn thanksgiving Mass.
