(ANS – Freetown) – Don Bosco Fambul, a Non Government Organization, is constructing an industrial Water Well for the Pademba Road Prison that will provide inmates with 60,000 litres of water per day.

According to the Director of Don Bosco Fambul, Bro. Lother Wagner, the aim of the project is to help address the current water shortage in the Pademba Road Prisons.  He explained that the services of Brunnenbau Conrad Ltd, a reliable German drilling Company,  have been engaged to provide technical facilities to dig the well. 50,000 Euro have been provided by their donor partners for the first phase of the project but it is expected that the cost will increase as the project continues.

The director of Don Bosco said the construction of the water well is a significant move as it will help the prison department to maintain hygiene in the prison. Water is life and prisoners deserve better sanitation despite their being prisoners. Bro. Lother Wagner went on to say that the Pademba road prison should be a rehabilitation and correctional centre where inmates will engage in basic training and educational skills  to enable them to be better citizens. He reaffirmed his organization’s commitment to provide services to the inmates of Pademba Road.

The Director of Sierra Leone Prison Service, Sampha B. Kamara, commended Don Bosco for the Construction of an Industrial well for the Prison and said the project is timely as the prison is presently faced with a serious water crisis. Kamara stated also that Don Bosco Fambul has been working tirelessly with the prisons department by providing counselling services. Don Bosco provides food and water for over 70 prisoners a day, and has also provided medical assistance to inmates and offered them stress therapy to ensure that they are mentally fit when released from prison.

Enrico Walter,  Head of Brunnenbau Conrad Ltd,  described the technical aspect of the project and said that his company has been successfully involved in several projects in the country. He gave an assurance that the project will last for at least four weeks, provided they find water in the current location.

He said he will ensure that his company drill a bore hole ten metres deep per day to fast tract the project and two inch pipes will be used to connect the water well to the prison. Storage facilities will be provided that will supply  60,000 litres of water a day and 40 litres of water per prisoner.
