(ANS - Heverlee) - The publication of 'Dignity', an English-language handbook on the protection of minors is amongst the various initiatives taken by Don Bosco Youth Net to celebrate its 10 years of existence. Because of its value in fostering respect for minors the text has received financial support from the European Youth Foundation.

Don Bosco Youth Net (DBYN), the international network of Salesian Youth Ministry offices and associations inspired by the Salesian charism, published 'Dignity' on August 16, Don Bosco's birthday. It addresses an increasingly important topic: the protection of children from various forms of exploitation and abuse.

At present there are not many resources available to youth workers to deal with this problem. The DBYN includes implementation of the principles of protection and safeguarding of children amongst its activities. With this publication it shows it is committed to informing those who work with young people about violations that occur frequently in many different circumstances, and offers to share best practice gained from its experience.

The book, which can be downloaded for free from the website, consists of three parts: the first part offers the ethical foundations for protection of minors in youth work and the second compares Human Rights with Don Bosco's Preventive System and offers some suggestions for daily practice, while the third presents practical and specific information about how to effectively implement protection of minors in organisations which involve young people.

The European Youth Foundation made a contribution to 'Dignity'. It is a fund established in 1972 by the Council of Europe to provide financial support for European youth activities that promote human rights, tolerance, respect and solidarity.
