(ANS – Lisbon) – The 2nd meeting of Commission for Salesian (SDB and FMA) schools in Europe met on 5-6 April in Lisbon. The Department (sdb) and Area (FMA) for Youth Ministry brought together 22 people from 11 countries in Europe.

The meeting had two main purposes: to study the outline of Salesian identity in schools and vocational training centres – a tool that can help them to evaluate progress in the main elements of Salesian education; and planning for 2013-2015, starting with topics already chosen by the Commission.

Provincial representatives for schools and vocational centres have looked at the common needs and challenges and by drawing up a list of indicators have chosen to examine three overall areas: the educational project; pedagogical skills and vocational education; organisational culture.

With regard to the educational project they studied Salesian educational style and the Preventive System; citizenship and a sense of belonging; autonomy and responsibility of students; study and sharing of the spiritual, ethical and Gospel values dimensions.

In the pedagogical skills and vocational education area they tackled topics such as the growth in Christian, Salesian and professional maturity of the teacher.

For the third area, organisational culture, they reflected on the educative and pastoral community, lparticipation and shared responsibility, and communication.

These reflections highlighted the importance of the family as an institution for evangelisation and education of their children. “The family is not just one educational agency amongst others; it cannot simply be attached to the school as one of several places for education and upbringing” they said

The work which was coordinated by Fr Miguel Angel García and Sr Elena Rastello, concluded by planning a third meeting in 2014. In view of this, and to recognise the patrimony of best practices in Salesian schools in Europe  Commission members have agreed to describe, gather and share successful initiatives developed by Salesians and the Sisters at local, provincial and national level.
