Italy – Arthur, from Ghana to Italy, braving the sea

(ANS - Camporeale) – This is the story of Arthur, one of twelve boys met on 1 October 2015 at the "Open Arms" community in Camporeale, near Palermo. It is one of the projects of the Salesians in Social Work on behalf of young refugees, asylum seekers and unaccompanied minors. With him there are young people from Syria, Iraq, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan, Egypt and countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

(ANS – Mumbai) – Father Leon Cruz is the only Salesian priest in India to be appointed as a Missionary of Mercy by Pope Francis in this Jubilee year of Mercy. He says of his appointment, "By God’s Grace and Mercy, I would be happy to reach out to as many people as possible as a Missionary of Mercy."

Punto elenco 24/2/2016 - Fiji – Cyclone ’Winston’ hits the archipelago. The Salesians are well
(ANS - Suva) – On Saturday 20 February 2016, cyclone Winston, one of the most devastating ever recorded in the Pacific, hit the archipelago of Fiji. At least 42 people were killed, thousands of homes were totally destroyed and there are about 34,000 displaced people. In the most affected areas much of the infrastructure was damaged or destroyed and the government has declared a state of natural disaster.

(ANS - Porto Novo) - Porto Novo, capital of Benin, is a city where the number of children forced to sleep on the streets is increasing every day. More than 30% of the population lives below the poverty line. While the country has made progress, the children of Benin still continue to suffer from diseases that sometimes are fatal, such as malaria, AIDS, respiratory diseases, or even dysentery. And another fact: 45% of Beninese children are forced to work.

(ANS - San Salvador)- The International Labour Organization gives a dark and disquieting report on youth employment. "There are 1.7 million newly unemployed in the region of Latin America, out of a total of 19 million" it was announced by the organization at the presentation in Lima, Peru, of the document. Work in 2015: overall view for Latin America and the Caribbean." The most worrying aspect is the situation of young people, because in the region, the youth unemployment rate is three times higher than that of adults. Faced with this gloomy picture, the Salesians want to offer a proposal.

Hyderabad, India - February 2016 - A meeting of the Provincial Economers of the South Asia Region took place from 21 to 23 February, in the Province of Hyderabad. It was led by Fr Piotr Gozdalski and Fabio Buconi from the Economer General’s office. During the opening session, the Provincial of Hyderabad, Fr Thathireddy Vijaya Bhaskar, stressed the importance of transparency and the ability to guide the Province efficiently and effectively. Various issues were discussed including compliance with tax laws, collaboration and relationship with the Economer General’s office, strengthening collaboration with the Mission office in New Delhi, improving financial management through a common accounting software package - Acme ERP - and the strengthening of financial management networks in the region. Mosquera, Colombia – 23 February 2016 - Fr Oscar Olano, Rector of the Salesian Community of Mosquera, presided over the celebration of the conferring of the Medal on the young postulants of the Daughters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary for the year 2016. The celebration was attended by the Superior General, Mother Eulalia Marín Rueda, priests, sisters and family members. Querétaro, Mexico - February 2016 – The Inter-Salesian Games held from 17 to 20 February at the Salesian Institute of Querétaro were attended by pupils of various Salesian schools, and other schools, who competed in various sports - athletics, football, basketball and volleyball. Parana, Argentina - February 2106 - The Second Provincial Congress of the Association of Salesian Cooperators in the Northern Province of Argentina took place from 6 to 8 February. The theme was "We are the seed of a great tree." The meeting was attended by 80 people including members of the Association of Salesian Cooperators, aspirants and sympathizers of the movement, under the guidance of Fr Alejandro Gómez, SDB, Provincial Delegate for the Cooperators. The Provincial Council of the Association was re-elected.
