India – Respect for women. No to forced marriages

(ANS - Hyderabad) - Forced marriages are one of the obstacles that keep many women all over the world from effectively exercising their rights. The Salesian Family is working to eliminate this injustice. Here is part of the testimony of a young Indian girl rescued by the Salesians.

(ANS - San Benito Petén) - On 8 March we celebrate International Women’s Day, a date that every year reminds us that there is still much to be done to guarantee the rights of women in many parts of the world. Fr Giampiero De Nardi, a Salesian missionary in San Benito Petén, speaks of the status of women in Guatemala and the Salesian commitment to improve their condition.

(ANS - Aden) - "Our stay in the places marked by division and poverty bears witness to faith in the Christian message." So wrote Fr Francesco Cereda, Vicar of the Rector Major, in explaining the meaning of the Salesian presence in Yemen. Like that of the Missionaries of Charity, the Salesian presence can only be understood in view of a service of mercy to God and to their brothers in need.

(ANS – Batulao) – The East-Asia Oceania (EAO) Provincial Superiors’ and Delegate Superiors’ Meeting opened yesterday, 7 March, with the presence of Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, Rector Major. Meanwhile the memory was still alive of the poignant visit of the Rector Major earllier to Tuloy sa Don Bosco, the work for street children in Muntinlupa City.

Madrid, Spain - 7 March 2016 - The Spanish Salesian missionary Fr José Gangoso was awarded the Medal of Isabella the Catholic for the service he has given over 33 years to the youth of Equatorial Guinea. The award, granted by the King of Spain, will be officially handed over to Fr Gangoso on 10 March at the Spanish Embassy in Malabo. Cusco, Peru – 3 March 2016 - As part of his missionary animation visit to the Province of Peru, Fr Alfred Maravilla of the Department for the Missions visited the missionary areas of the southern Andes and the Apostolic Vicariate of Pucallpa. During his visit he met the missionaries of the area for a time of sharing and discussion. In Cusco he met members of the Salesian Family of the area and gave a conference on the missionary dimension of the Salesian charism. Hong Kong, China - February 2016 - About 200 young people participated in the Salesian Youth Day, an annual celebration for young people who share the charism of Don Bosco. The event took place in Hong Kong on 27 February. The theme was: "chastity, the most beautiful virtue". The day was organized by members of the Salesian Family in three stages: screening of movies on the theme; games; and finally, a penitential liturgy in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Ypacarai, Paraguay - February 2016 – The festive oratory of St Francis de Sales in the parish of St Vincent de Paul held an Assembly on 27 and 28 February. During the meeting they evaluated the experience of the summer camp and the new representatives of the centre were elected.
