Guayaquil, Ecuador – 11 March 2013 – On 11 March a special Mass was celebrated at the Shrine to Mary Help of Christians in honour of Fr Luigi Arba sdb who has just turned 100. Born at Cagliari, Italy, in 1913, he completed his novitiate at Lanuvio (Rome) in 1933, and was sent as a missionary to Ecuador in 1934. He was then sent to Monteortone, Italy, for his theological studies (1938-1942), and was ordained on 29 June 1943. He continued his studies, specialising in Canon Law and gained his Licentiate at the Pontifical Salesian Athenaeum in Turin in 1946, then following a brief time at San Tarcisio (Rome) returned to Ecuador. Amongst roles that he has held in Ecuador he includfes that of provincial economer, rector of the technical college at Cuenca, bursar and parish priest at Macas mission, parish priest at Zaruma and vice rector at Riobamba.
