Khartoum, Sudan – 1 January 2011 – A few days before the referendum which could in fact sanction the division of Sudan, the situation in the refugee camps is drastic. According to the High Commission for Refugees of the United Nations (UNHCR) there are about 55,000 Sudanese who in the last week have arrived in the southern part of the country. Salesian sources speak about the numbers in the Salesian centres being reduced by over half, and the schools of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians will not be re-opening because of the lack of students and staff. The people huddled together in the transit camps in Khartoum waiting for over a month to be transferred are living in inhuman conditions, without any kind of assistance. Only the parishes which have a Sudanese priest can bring in help but this is insufficient. |
