(ANS – Rome) – This morning was the official start of the preparation course for the new missionaries of the 143rd Salesian Missionary Expedition. The course aims to provide the new missionaries with the means and the attitudes required to meet, educate and evangelise new peoples and needy youngsters.

“The preparation course for the new missionaries is a first hand training opportunity before they leave after an initial period of preparation in their own province and before a careful process of accompaniment in the province to which they destined so as to assist them in becoming integrated in their new cultural, social and ecclesial setting” explains Fr Václav Klement, General Councillor for the Missions.

There are 45 of them: the majority young postnovices (22), and in addition 6 Brothers and 17 Priests. They come from the following Salesian Regions: Africa Madagascar 5, America South Cone 2, Interamerica 1, North Europe 5, East Asia-Oceania 21 (17 of them from Vietnam), South Asia 8, Italy-Middle East 2 and West Europe 1. The Salesian Regions to which they are destined are: Africa Madagascar 11, America South Cone 8, Interamerica 7, North Europe 10, East Asia-Oceania 8 and South Asia 1.

The course is modular-based and the method one of workshops. Each module has four elements: personal experience, learning and discussion through the presentation of a particular topic, personal and  group reflection, and the drawing up of one’s personal understanding of the issues. The Word of God will be given great importance as also a daily spiritual diary in which the new missionary is invited to look at  his own experience in the light of the topic dealt with that day. Integral to the whole process – in the Salesian style and as aid to those taking part to get to know one another and share on an inter-cultural level – will be sporting activities, guided tours, social evenings and meetings with Salesians in initial formation.

The first part of the course will be held at the Generalate in Rome in the via della Pisana and the second in Piedmont, in the places with Salesian connections (Mornese, Colle Don Bosco, Castelnuovo d’Asti, Chieri and Turin). It will conclude on Sunday 30 September with the presentation of the missionary crucifix in the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians. Presiding at the 143rd Salesian Missionary Departure Ceremony will be the Rector Major of the Salesians, Fr Pascual Chávez Villanueva.
