The Salesian missionary Fr Antonio Gutiérrez describes the village of Kong as the place of the “quick wells” because in addition to the good will of the owner of the land it was possible to rely on the involvement of the local people.
With five different groups who asked that wells be dug, the missionary visited the places where they wanted to dig them. One of these however, it was not possible to dig because where the group wanted it was too close to where people were living; but this type of well needs several weeks work and the farmers could not give the time without the danger of losing their crops.
“When I saw how ready they were,” the missionary reports, “I told them we would have a week. On Tuesday afternoon they gathered together and on Wednesday they began working in four separate places far apart from each other: on Thursday there were already two irrigation wells producing water and the other two were ready on Friday.”
“It was not easy to visit all the wells as they were being dug since they are far apart,” Fr Gutiérrez says. “However the people were so happy to see the water and they came to thank me, so I encouarged them to keep working.”
“I think they were very pleased to see how work that is well organised can produce results, and for me it was a great joy to see how already this year we have dug 24 wells in the dry season. This also means that the women have easier access to water and they can cultivate their gardens nears their homes in the dry season” the Salesian missionary concludes.
