There are 122 people in the group, including priests, religious and laity, with the Servant of God Fr Antoni Henryk Szuman as their leader; all were victims of the Nazis. The Servants of God gave their lives for the faith in various places in Poland and also in the death camps of Dachau, Sachsenhausen, Mittelbau, Buchenwald.
There are 9 Salesians of Don Bosco amongst them: Fr Jan Swierc and 7 companions from Krakow, martyred at Auschwitz, and Fr Franciszek Miska who was Rector of the “Sons of Mary” Junior Seminary in Lad from 1936-1942, he was interned in the concentration camp at Dachau, where he died of torture and mistreatment May 30, 1942.
Postulators from seven Polish dioceses and twelve Religious Congregations linked to the martyred candidates for the glory of the altars were the closing session. Fr Michal Szafarski of Krakow and Fr Jaroslaw Wasowicz, Pila Province were the Salesian vice-postulators present. There were also many priests and the parishioners from the parishes where the World War II martyrs came from. Fr Dariusz Drążek was appointed Postulator for the Roman phase of the process.
One of the results of the first stage of the process of beatification is the publication of “Zginęli za wiarę”, containing biographies of each candidate. Authors of this book are Frs Wojciech Wiesław Mazurowski and Węckowski, from Pelplin.
