Accompanied by the Spanish Ambassador to the country Dr. Manuel Hernandez Ruigómez, Dr Soraya Rodriguez Ramos visited the city of Gressier to see for herself the progress being made in the construction of the Educational Centre financed in part by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation, through the Salesian NGO “Jóvenes y Desarrollo” and the Rinaldi Foundation of the Salesians in Haiti.
“The future is in education, which is the future in all countries, and this is even more true for Haiti” Dr Rodriguez Ramos said.
“It is with great happiness and hope that we welcome Dr Soraya” the Superior of the Salesians in Haiti, Fr Sylvain Ducange said at the Educational Centre in Gressier, the first large building project undertaken by the Salesians following the earthquake on 12 January 2010.
According to the plans the educational complex in Gressier will include a primary school, a higher institute and a hostel for orphans from the neighbouring communities and from the rest of the country. In addition the Salesian community is hoping to build a multi-purpose sports hall, a vocational training school and an agricultural school.
At the weekends the centre will also host sporting and recreational activities and as Fr Ducange explained the aim of the Salesians is to promote through the building of the centre, the all-round development of children and youngsters.
