Sri Lanka – Opening of a new centre for professional training |
In a land which has suffered greatly through war and still bears the marks of violence, a ray of hope has come from the Salesian centre in Murunkan, where the Salesians have opened a new aspirantate, as part of the “Saint John Bosco” school and it already has 30 students being prepared by the Salesian teachers to become the spiritual guides of the local people.
Among those present at the ceremony were all the Salesians of the community. The ribbon was cut by Fr Nihal Liyanaghe, Superior of the “Saint Joseph” Vice Province of Sri Lanka, with Fr Pius Rathappillil, Rector of Murunkan and Fr Paul Kachappilly, Delegate for Social Communications and the Missions.
On his last two visits to Sri Lanka Fr Pascual Chávez, Rector Major, saw the need to open an aspirantate in the North of the country and encouraged the Salesian community to take up the challenge. Given its importance the Salesians moved quickly and built the premises at Murunkan, and are already thinking about the possibility of other initiatives in the villages further to the north.
The new aspirantate is an addition to the pastoral services the community in Murunkar provides for the benefit of the local people. The centre includes a parish, a non-formal technical school, a boarding section, an English school and a re-habilitation centre for former child soldiers.
