On their arrival the Salesians had to face a social situation marked by violence, social inequality and extreme poverty. Their first pastoral work was aimed at creating opportunities for development, vocational training and sports activities and to offer new hope. Through their work with children and the young, the Salesians began to provide a positive response in the field of education and of social responsibility.
In the first video, starting from independence obtained in 1804, the historical contest of the country and its political progress is presented. This has been marked by wars and various abuses which have reduced the country to a state of extreme poverty. It is in this context that the Salesians want to be a voice of hope and point to a new direction for the future.
The second video presents the beginnings of the Little Schools of Father Bohnen (OPEPB), which in the face of society’s problems did two very practical things: provided food and education. Today it can be said that it was one of the biggest works in the world helping every day about 20,000 children.
The Little Schools have the same aim as Don Bosco: to form “Good Christians and upright citizens.” For this purpose the Salesians began the oratories, places full of joy which educate through sport, the theatre, vocational training.
The place itself is not important but rather the atmosphere which is created, since it is intended to train people who will work for a better future. On this account each Salesian and each educator attends to the needs of the young in order to become for them a good guide. The Little Schools do precisely this, and by providing food and an education they also help to give them other values which makes it easier for the pupils to find work and take their place in society.
