(ANS – Rome) – The International Volunteer Movement for Development (VIS) is promoting a video competition on active citizenship entitled “Citizens of the world … for a possible world!”

The competition officially announced by VIS half way through July is now being launched with the details regarding entry requirements; the final date originally set as 1st October, has been postponed until 30 November 2009, to allow more young people to participate.

The VIS competition is open to young people between 18 and 25 and is intended to  reflect as far as possible how it is possible to be responsible and active citizens and so built up a fairer and more just society With short films (at maximum  lasting two minutes), published on Youtube – the most well-known and wide-spread video archive in the world – the young participants can share with their peers in every part of the world  their own reflections and so give a significant boost to discussion on the subject.

Individuals or groups can enter the competition. An expert jury will pick the winning video which will be shown during a meeting of VIS volunteers planned for 2010 in Africa. The winner (or 2 representatives in  the case of a group project) will have the opportunity to demonstrate to the assembly their creative and social experience.

The video competition is one of the fruits of the International Congress on “The Preventive System and Human Rights” held in Roma between 2 and 6 January 2009  organised by the Youth Ministry Department and VIS.

In the words of the Rector Major, the Congress was “a decisive impetus in sustaining the development of a process of research, formation and activity which we now have to promote at Provincial and local level.” The competition is a move in that direction as indicated by Fr Chavez and aims to educate young people to take part in individual and social commitment  for respect for Human  Rights.

The details of the rules for the competition can be found on the donbosco-humanrights site.
