The appointment was made during the Annual Assembly of the Committee for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights held on 31 March at the UNICEF Offices in Rome. As well as Carola Carazzone, Barbara Terenzi from the Lelio Basso International Foundation was also confirmed as coordinator.
The Committee for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights is a network of 80 Italian associations and non-government organisations which operate in the area of Human Rights and their Promotion. It was created in 2002 by an initiative of the Basso Foundation –International Section by a group of non-government organisations active in the field of Human Rights with the support of a group of experts in Human Rights.
The Committee has the role of promoting and supporting the legislative process for the creation in Italy of an “Independent National Institution for Human Rights,” in line with the standards promoted by the General Assembly of the United Nations (Resolution 48/134 of 20 December 1993) and the Paris Principles.
In addition the Committee fosters the holding of “cultural activities for the spreading of information regarding problem areas in the area of Human Rights with particular attention to the situation in Italy and in Europe with the aim of drawing the attention of civil society as a whole to violations committed in “democratically well-established” countries.
