| Spain – The work of the World Consultative Meeting on Social Communication in Madrid |
The purpose of the meeting chaired by Fr Filiberto González, Councillor for Social Communication will be to reflect on and evaluate the activities of the Congregation in the field of communication and the projects on which Salesians are working.
There will be 19 Salesians from all over the world present at the meeting which will be held in the Salesian house in Carabanchel, a district of Madrid.
Among the topics the Council will be called upon to consider are the formation in communications of Salesians, educators and their pupils; how to put into effect the recommendations of the 26th General Chapter regarding social communications including the formulation and the development of a policy about free/libre open source software; a study of the forms of management of Salesian communication businesses and the development of Salesian centres of formation in relation to the world of communication.
Following the example of its founder, Don Bosco, the Salesian Congregation is busy working in a variety of fields including that of communication. Today the Sons of Don Bosco manage about 20 university centres which have specialist courses in Communication Studies, 48 publishing houses, 55 graphic art centres, 21 audiovisual production centres, 88 book-shops, 32 radio and 11 television stations. There are about 400 Salesians engaged in this area together with 2,500 lay professionals and technicians.
