On this special occasion, Fr Chávez, on a visit to the Vice Province of Mozambique (MOZ), sent the following message.
“It is with great joy that I greet you, to offer on my own behalf, on that of my Council and of the whole Congregation, my very best wishes on the appointment with which His Holiness Benedict XVI has honoured you as a member of the College of Cardinals.
It is a personal recognition of your generous, faithful and expert service to the Apostolic See, and at the same time a gesture of esteem for the whole Congregation which feels deeply honoured with the new mark of distinction on the part of the Holy Father.
Your being numbered among the Cardinals of our Holy Mother the Church coincides with the death of our dear Cardinal Rosalio Castillo Lara. While I entrust him to the merciful love of the Father I wish you a fruitful ministry in this new stage of your life.”
