(ANS – Salvador) –On Saturday morning, August 15th, the Salesian house Don Bosco of Salvador inaugurated a monument in honour of Don Bosco, made by Bel Borba, a reference artist in collage art and urban projects. The event was celebrated at the conclusion of the feasts on the Bicentenary of Don Bosco’s birth, of the 10th anniversary of Don Bosco College and of the 115 years of the house of Nazaré.

A Eucharistic celebration in Our Lady Help of Christians High School was presided over by the auxiliary bishop of the Archidiocese of Salvador, Msgr. Estevan dos Santos, and was concelebrated by Fr. Eliano Queiroz, Rector of the house. Artistic presentations of solidarity, tributes of honour to the parents and Olympic games were also part of the program.

On the place where the sculpture of the Bicentenary is located, the school will be always in charge of the maintenance of streets “Avenida Paralela” and “Avenida San Antonio de Padua” and of other works to the benefit of the community. Besides this, the school has already done a new road surface and landscaping.

Moreover, next August 29th, there will be the feast of the Salesian house Salvador, during which a new postage stamp will also be presented.

The work of sculptor and visual artist Bel Borba shows an image of Don Bosco’s face in a three-dimensional array. It is composed of about 3.000 holes in a steel place 0.5” thick, which accompany the basic painting and with black and white finishing. The result is a presentation that explores the limits of perception and which can be looked at from different angles.

“Since it is a sacred figure, a saint”, says the author of the work, “I wanted to play with appearance. Lay people often associate divine with apparitions, people generally believe only in what materializes… therefore I made a whole of transparent and different superimposed layers, with the internal part black and the external part white, which give the impression that the face is materializing, appearing. Then I wanted to bring out Don Bosco’s face and his 200 years. A very interesting detail: life through sculpture… Nothing has ever been used in this way, because it is like taking a photo, seeing the sky, the landscape of the road, and from any angle one always sees life that passes”.
