(ANS - Valencia) - The Salesian Mission Office in Madrid participated, on 28 May, in a round table conference on child trafficking in Africa, organized in Valencia by the NGO "Global Networking for Rights and Development". Others to participate in the conference included Joseph Chalengi, President of the African Economic, Social and Cultural Union; Mohamed Lemine Haless, President of Promocion y Defensa de los Derechos Humanos, an NGO from Mauritania; and Professor Ximo Revert from the University of Valencia.

After the screening of the documentary made by the Salesian Mission Office in Madrid No estoy en venta (I am not for sale), on the reality of child victims of trafficking in Africa, Ana Muñoz, spokesperson of the Salesian Mission Office, said that trafficking in children is the slavery of the new century and spoke about the work being done by Salesian missionaries in countries such as Benin.

She added that it is not an easy problem to solve, and that its causes are manifold, but poverty, lack of education and the sense of impunity are the first levers on which to act to eliminate or at least reduce the numbers of this sad phenomenon.

“We at the Salesian Mission Office in Madrid cannot stop the traffickers and put them in jail, but we can accommodate and help children and families and we can inform the public about the phenomenon and work with governments and the security forces to eradicate this scourge.”

For his part, Mr. Lemine Haless stressed the need to put an end to this scourge that reduces the opportunities for the continent's future: “We can do a lot together. For example, by thoroughly analysing the problem, informing organizations and authorities, educating the families and collaborating on every aspect, because the problem knows no boundaries.”

Professor Revert spoke of the important role of the University as an agent in cooperation and assistance through the strengthening of education systems.

Finally, Dr Joseph Chalengi emphasized the importance of giving a voice to Africans when facing the challenges of the future. “We should be proud to be African and proud of our values,” he said. “Africa needs partners, not aid. We must come to ensure that other countries see Africa as a partner, as an equal.”
