Liberia – A slow return to normality |
(ANS - Monrovia) - The situation in relation to the Ebola virus is improving in Liberia, but it is still too early to declare the battle won. In many regions more than forty-two days passed with no new cases. That is twice the incubation period of the disease. However, there was one new infection in Monrovia on 20 March.
In recent weeks, the President of the country, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, decided to reopen the borders. In the neighbouring countries of Guinea and Sierra Leone, the situation is improving but is still not clear. There are new cases every day and in many of them it is not known where the infection came from.
The school has reopened and all activities are being resumed in the Salesian mission of Matadi, a district of the capital, Monrovia. Fr Jorge Crisafulli, Provincial of English-speaking West Africa, is scheduled to visit soon. He will stay for two weeks, taking advantage of the reopening of the borders.
"Providence continues to move the hearts and open the hands of many,” says Fr Nicola Ciarapica, Rector of the Salesian Community in Matadi. “We have managed so far to help 100 families to pay school fees. Requests for help come every day. We can testify that even in the situation of suffering, caused by the Ebola infection, dedication, solidarity and love are bringing life. They are really stronger than the fear of disease and death.
Let us continue to keep each other in prayer as we prepare for Easter, giving witness by our love to the One who gave his life for us."
