(ANS - Rome) - Since 22 September the 23rd General Chapter of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians has been studying and debating run the theme "Being with young people today - a home that evangelizes." Tomorrow 24 October it comes to one of the most anticipated phases, that of the election of the Council. The election of the Mother General is expected tomorrow morning.
Since yesterday, the 194 Daughters of Mary Help of Christians participating in the General Chapter have been engaged in discernment. Guiding this process is Fr José Cristo Rey García Paredes, Claretian, who held the same role last March at the General Chapter of the Salesians. For some months now he has been assisting the FMA General Council in the process of preparation for the chapter.
The Rector Major of the Salesians, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, will also participate in this important day for the FMA. Early in the morning he will preside at the Mass for the Chapter at the Mother House of the Sisters. He will remain with the sisters until the election of the Mother General, in order to congratulate her and renew the spirit of fraternity between the two congregations.
The election of the other members of the General Council will begin on Saturday with the voting for the Vicar General, the Councillors for the six sectors and the seven Visiting Councillors. The process of discernment is scheduled to end on 29 October.
On Thursday 30 October, when the elections are complete, the Mother General and the new Council, along with all the members of the Chapter, will go on pilgrimage to the Basilica of St Mary Major to express their gratitude to Mary. They will entrust to her the rest of the work of the Chapter and the life of each community. The General Chapter of the FMA continues until 18 November.
