(ANS - Tambacounda) - The vocational training centre of Tambacounda, one of three in the whole of Senegal , recently announced the opening of a centre of excellence in new information technology and communication. The initiative aims to promote, among other things, the access of girls, so far underrepresented in the traditional professional courses of the centre, with only 6 female students out of a total of 137 students.
The Don Bosco Centre in Tambacounda, in the Salesian Province of French-speaking West Africa (AFO), started its operations on 10 November 1980, with just 4 students enrolled in a course for the production of metals. They studied under a tree, on the premises of the present parish of St. Clement. A pioneer in the field of technical education and vocational training in Tambacounda, the centre gradually expanded and in recent years has trained over 2280 students in courses in automobile mechanics and electricity.
At the end of September, the centre celebrated their Socio-Cultural Days open to all comers. During the opening ceremony, in front of many spectators, including children from the Kobes kindergarten, the director, Bro. Francesco Coly, SDB, said that the training of specialists in the technical-professional fields is linked to education in civic values. This means that students are formed to become good workers and good citizens.
"A visit to the centre will let you see that here we are up to date with the latest innovations, and fully in line with the changes and developments in information technology and clean energy. In all the courses, from construction to hotel management, students are provided with knowledge of the latest developments in the industry," said the director.
The centre has been operating a driving school for several years, especially for students in automobile mechanics. It aims to teach students the importance of road safety.
