(ANS – Rome) – Yesterday afternoon, 5 December, the winter plenary session of the General Council began. The Councillors having returned from the five continents, gathered around the Rector Major, in the next two months they will be dealing with the appointment of new Provincials, the study of certain issues and the reports of the Extraordinary Visitations, the distribution of funds for the missions and the budget for the coming year. Also among the activities of the General Council is the course of formation for some recently appointed Provincials.
Already on 2 December the General Council had begun this winter session with a meeting at which each one was able to say something about his activities during the previous months.
Items on the agenda of the Council are the appointment of new Provincials for Brazil San Paolo (BSP), North East Italy (INE), Slovenia (SLO), Croatia (CRO) and Chile (CIL) and the examination of reports on the Extraordinary Visitations of the Provinces of the Antilles, Paraguay, Thailand, Chile, Poland Warsaw, India Guwahati and India Panjim, and the Vice Province of Mozambique.
Some issues receiving special attention are connected with the animation and government of the Congregation: the structures of central government, the division of the Province of Guwahati (ING), India, the redistribution of Salesian presences in the Special Circumscription of East Europe and the decision regarding to which Province the Salesian presences in North Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Libya) will belong.
Another item is the distribution of funds for the missions and the presentation and approval of the budget for 2012.

The Council will stop work on 23 December for the Christmas break, before starting again on 9 January 2012 and finishing on 27 January.
