(ANS – San José) – On Thursday 20 October Angie Marín, Maylin Valverde and Melina Jiménez, students in the final year of the information technology course at the CEDES Don Bosco Tecnnical Institute in San José, were awarded first place in the Expoingegneria 2011.

The girls presented a computer system which will facilitate the transfer of patients to hospital making it possible for paramedical personnel to automatically send information by mobile phone and assist the better treatment of the patients.

The project called SOS was considered the best of the 56 submitted, involving 138 students from different schools in the country. The programme could be very useful in the health service, since it could mean that when a patient arrives at the hospital the doctors already know health information (blood pressure, heart beat and blood group).

At present this work is done manuallly, and nurses and hospital porters write down the patient’s information which is then checked by the doctors. With this system, however, the doctors can get to work more quickly.

José Miguel González from the VI year of the Don Bosco Technical Institute, was another success story as he obtained first place in the electronics category, with a braille printer which uses rolls of light paper to create the necessary patterns needed to read this language.

“Printing on ordinary paper in braille is very expensive and the paper can only be used once. With this printer, however, it is re-usable and reads ther text electronically” he explains.

The high academic level was also demonstrated by Ana Victoria Solís and Karen Zúñiga, also from the Don Bosco Technical Institute, who won in the electrical engineering and electronics category with their “Techno Mouse Tool”, a device a person has on their foreheads which enables them to manoeuvre the mouse of the computer.

All these projects will be among the competitors at the International Fair of Science and Technology “Intel ISEF”, as well as the winners of the National Fair of Science and Technology.
