(ANS - Santiago) - Thursday, August 25, while the Central Workers Union (CUT) were demonstrating in Santiago, Chile, the main entrance to the Mary Help of Christians Church was set alight and several windows destroyed. The Salesian Community has made a statement to the press, which we publish below.

Given the attack on the Gratitud Nacional Church on the afternoon of Thursday, August 25, the Salesian Congregation declares that:

1. At the end of demonstrations called by the Central Workers Union (CUT) at the intersection of Ricardo Cumming and Alameda streets, a group set fire to the main main entrance to the Church without destroying it completely. They also broke eight windows and tried to force two side doors to get in and continue their devastation.

2. The staff of the construction company undertaking repairs to the church, damaged by the earthquake in February 2010, blocked the protesters, and prevented them from further efforts.

3. Thanks to Police fire hoses, the fire was extinguished and the protesters dispersed. They saw to the safety of people inside and protected the Church from further damage.

4. The Congregation deeply regrets this situation, and urges the same sentiments as expressed by the President of the Episcopal Conference, Archbishop Ricardo Ezzati, in his appeal that “legitimate demonstrations by citizens be held in an atmosphere of peace and respect, without provocation or aggression, ensuring people's dignity nd the common good”.
