Organised by Salesian past pupil Damien Donegan (28) and his sisters Louise (30) and Amy (19), with cooperation from the local police, the race was run over 4.7 km and was won in a time of 13.22 minutes by past pupil Mark Kenneally of Clonliffe Harries Athletic Club, who makes his marathon debut in Madrid in two weeks time. When a pupil, Mark was four times winner of the school`s own annual road race.
Saturday`s Road Race was part of a series of events which include a world cup football blitz and a 7-day climbing expedition by a group of 40 people to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in June, in order to raise 200.000 € to help “Concern’s” work in Tanzania. The Road Race raised 1400 €
Many of the runners were on their first visit back to their former school since they left about ten years ago. They met with some of their former companions and teachers. They enjoyed the occasion so much, they hope the race may become an annual event that can help other charities as well.
