16/3/2011 - India - DB Tech launches a new project for the training of thousands of young people

(ANS – Tura) – On Sunday 13 March at Tura, in the State of Meghalaya, the Union Minister of State for Rural Development Ms Agatha K Sangma inaugurated the Bosco Academy for Skills & Employment – BASE which envisages the involvement of the Salesians in the training and employment of 7800 young people from Meghalaya and Nagaland. 

The programme is funded by the Union Ministry for Rural Development under the Swarnajayanti Gram Swarojbgar Yojana (SGSY) which aims to provide employment-linked, market-oriented training to BPL (below poverty line) youngsters in the age group of 18 to 35 years.

Under the SGSY special project, the Union Ministry for Rural Development has granted four projects to Don Bosco Tech (DBTech) to train several thousand young people. In Meghalaya, Shillong, Umran and Mendal there are other DB Tech centres which will provide the training.

DB Tech will initially provide training in tourism and hospitality sectors, with basic skills in computers. In the hospitality sector, specific training will be given to selected candidates in food and beverages wing. Each course will be of three months` duration.

Inaugurating the project, the Minister exhorted the young people of North East India to make use of the training facilities available at Don Bosco to qualify themselves, obtain employment and become self-reliant so that they can face the future with courage and confidence.

The “Don Bosco Tech” with its 125 Salesian centres operating in 25 Indian States is the largest NGO in India involved in vocational training. The centres cater for the training of young people who are economically and socially marginalised and from families living below the poverty line.
