The agenda dealt with the subjects of evangelical poverty, the identity and the role of the Provincial Economer as well as practical administrative issues such as styles of accounting and budgeting. They were also given an account of the structure of the Office of the Economer General, its aims, ways of operating and the various forms of relating to the Provinces.
The various working sessions were led by those directly involved, in the first place by Fr Piotr Gozdalski and Fr Luciano Alloisio. The new Economer General, Bro. Jean Paul Muller, was present on a regular basis and n his organisational and personal gifts were appreciated. Bro. Claudio Marangio, the former Economer also made his contribution to the success of the meeting, first in being involved in its organisation, and then in giving some talks on issues of formation.
At the end the Provincial Economers expressed their general satisfaction: “a very important and beneficial course for the efficient and systematic administration of our Provinces” was how Fr Gabriel Myint Aung, Economer of the “Mary Help of Christians” Province of Myanmar described it. For Fr Luis Fernando Valencia Mosquera, Economer of the Colombia-Medellín Province, “looking at our responsibilities, the course has helped us to return to Don Bosco”.
Through the course the Economers not only acquired new technical and administrative ideas, but also were reminded of the importance of their task and the possibilities it offers for service, for the good of the communities and of the Salesian mission. As Fr Jaques Charles, Economer of Haiti, put it “if we make the effort to manage the resources of the Province in the right way, we shall certainly be faithful to our mission.”
