Organised by the “Association pro-Marinelli – Francesco Convertini” and the Cisternino Salesian Institute, with the support of the local authorities of Cisternino and Locorotondo, it was also sponsored by the Region of Puglia, the Provinces of Bari and Brindisi and about another 40 local authorities, association and organisations.
Among those present were the Mayor of Cisternino and the Deputy Mayor of Locorotondo, local council members, Bishop Domenico Padovano of the diocese of Conversano-Monopoli, Fr Pierluigi Cameroni, Postulator General for the Causes of the Saints of the Salesian Family, Fr Gaetano Nalesso, Rector and parish priest of the Cisternino community and other priests and parish priests. Several thousand people took part in the March under the banner “Brotherhood without boundaries.”
Speaking to those present Bishop Padovano took up the message of the Pope for World Peace Day this year and Fr Cameroni invited them to pray with fervour and confidence for the beatification of the Salesian missionary.
As on previous occasions there were two processions starting from Locorotondo and from Cisternino and meeting up at Marinelli, where there is the house where Fr Convertini was born and a large oak tree under which he used to meditate when he returned to Italy.
In previous months and during the day of the March funds were collected for the benefit of the diocese of Krishnagar and in order to provide buildings for the formative cultural and recreational activities of youngsters.
At the beginning of February workshops were started on education to peace and solidarity based on recreational and cultural activities which examined the life and work of Fr Convertini and his love for the poor and those most in need.
The cause of beatification and canonisation of the Servant of God Fr Francesco Convertini was introduced on 16 October 1991. On 11 March 2009 the “Positio” on the Servant of God was officially presented to the Offices of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints
