The purpose of the meeting was to reflect on the first key issue of the 26th General Chapter (GC26), “Returning to Don Bosco” and to see how this process was progressing in the Congregation, so as to be able to propose new procedures for further study of the Salesian charism. In the course of the meeting and the discussions there emerged the need to clarify precisely the role of animation entrusted to the Delegate for Youth Ministry, and to avoid reducing it to one of his being responsible for all the activities.
Among the conclusions which the reference persons and the regional coordinators take back with them to their respective places is the conviction that there is a need to give a new impetus to the animation, formation and organisation of pastoral work. This should take place, in particular, in examining certain transversal issues such as: “the all-round view of the Salesian,” understood as paying attention to individuals in their relationships, formation, processes of growth at personal and at Province level; and constant reflection on what it means to be pastors, so as to give focus to and deepen the charismatic dimension. This is a process which needs to be carried out in every Province by means of regular times for study and recollection, for renewing the commitment as consecrated persons and to avoid the danger of activism.
Another important point in the conclusions was the assessment of Youth Ministry from the point of view of re-thinking. The challenge of the relationship between education and evangelisation is one facing the whole Congregation and calls for a response regarding formation at all levels of the Salesian mission.
Finally the importance was emphasised of realising and making this known that the coordination of Youth Ministry goes far beyond the initiatives and the activities and involves everyone in the work of synergy, through the efforts of the Provincial Council, the Delegates for the various sectors the members of the various centres and in the local Church.
