(ANS – Santander) – A fire which started at 16.00 on Sunday 6 February, burned the front part of the theatre of the “Mary Help of Christians” Salesian Institute in Santander. Four teams of fire fighters were needed to cope with the situation and they spent over 3 hours putting out the flames  and damping down the auditorium.

The cause is not known of the fire which destroyed the stage and the electrical equipment in the hall. The roof of the auditorium and nearby rooms were damaged by the smoke. According to the estimates of the fire-service the  temperature was over 450º C and caused considerable material damage .

Fortunately no one was injured since the normal Sunday film-show in the Oratory  had not begun and there was no one in the building.

It was a worrying time for the Salesian community, but at least, although there was damage to the building,  no one was injured and the emergency was dealt with swiftly, calmly  and in a professional manner.
