Sudan – An appeal to the international community |

Sudan – Ongoing suffering in an almost forgotten conflict |
In Khartoum there are many reception centres but those who want to leave are impeded and if they succeed are later frequently stopped along the way by police who demand money to allow the trucks and buses crowded with people to pass.
In these conditions, as always, it is especially the weak who are penalised the most. During the long and slow journey the children suffer in the atrocious conditions without any assistance. Many are covered with dust not having any water with which to wash themselves or even to drink.
Among the few who are helping and supporting the migrants are the missionaries and the members of the local churches. If a convey stops close to a charitable Christian organisation they are assured of help in particular for the mothers and babies, who often go for hours without eating or drinking the bare minimum.
The local Church gathered the parish clergy together recently to organise what help they can for the convoys. But this too is difficult since even if some money is available it cannot easily be put to much use. Safety is an issue for everyone and there are always risks.
Outbreaks of fighting continue and are reported by various news agencies. Just today Gier Chuang, Minister of the Interior for Southern Sudan confirmed the death of 10 civilians and 18 others wounded along the border between north and south.
On ANSchannel a video is available with pictures of the tragedy filmed on 1 January the celebration of the beginning of the new year and World Peace Day.
