It was organised by the Committee for Human Rights and the Inter-religious Forum in Bagé. The Salesian Institute of “San Pedro” was the only Catholic Institute taking part , in this way, though its youthful presence demonstrating the commitment of the Salesians to the defence of life.
Speaking on behalf of the Catholic Church, Bishop Gilio Felício of Bagé, in Rio Grande do Sul, said that the march was victory for the Church: “In fact, this is an ecumenical dream already suggested by John Paul II, and reflects the concern of Benedict XVI. Both are convinced that fidelity to Christ requires dialogue among the religions.”
According to the Mayor Luis Eduardo Colombo dos Santos, one of those taking part, “it was very important to see the different religions, cultures and points of view coming together, in defence of life. This is what we want to mark the anniversary of the city, everyone united, forgetting their differences so that Bagé can continue to advance.”
