The National Science and Technology Fair is an event organised by the Teachers’ Training College of the University of Costa Rica with the support of the Public Universities (University of Costa Rica, National University, External University and the Technological Institute), of the Ministries of Science and Technology and of Public Education and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Research.
Taking part were about 220 research projects divided in categories according to the academic year of the students, from elementary school up to the fourth cycle. There were 50 prizewinners among the children and young people. The XXIV in the series of Fairs was held at the University of Costa Rica Sports Centre at Sabanilla de Montes de Oca. The results were announced on an Friday 12 November at the Law Faculty “Alberto Brenes Córdoba” Auditorium.
The Salesian students presented a project - INFUNDIESEL – transforming chicken fat and lecithin into a bio-combustible material to be used instead of diesel. A one hundred percent natural substance which does not contaminate the environment it has been successfully tried with several engines.
The three students from the Don Bosco Institute received two awards: first place in the technological research and development projects and first place among general chemical projects.
Shortly from among the winners a selection will be made of the representatives of Costa Rica at the International Fair of Science and Engineering of INTEL (ICER) to be held in July 2011 in Los Ángeles, USA. Since 2001 the winners at the National Fair have gone on to win awards and prizes at the international events.
