Taking part in the event in addition to the Chancellor of the UCB Fr Décio Batista Teixeira, and the Rector Fr José Romualdo Degasperi, and other academic authorities was Fr Fabio Attard, Councillor for Youth Ministry and representing the Rector Major.
During the ceremony, in addition to Fr Garulo, Prof. José Teixeira da Costa Nazareth and “in memoriam” the town-planner Lúcio Costa Lima Marçal Ferreira Ribeiro were also honoured.
Fr Garulo received the Doctorate “Honoris Causa” in recognition of his work in coordinating the International Network bringing together all the Salesian Institutions for Higher Education (IUS) including the UCB. Fr Garulo, who gave a impassioned presentation of the IUS project and the contribution is has made to higher education declared that “In the future universities without a social relevance will not survive. It is necessary to be constantly renewing.” He then said that the award conferred on him was in fact recognition for all the work undertaken by the IUS. “It is a further motive for our Salesian mission.”
Prof. José Teixeira da Costa Nazareth was given the Good Shepherd Gold Medal for having brought together in 1972 a group of teachers from religious schools to create an Institution for Catholic Higher Education thus founding the Catholic University of Brasilia. Lucio Costa Lima Marçal Ferreira Ribeiro was given “in memoriam” the title of Doctor “Honoris Causa” for his contribution to the creation of Brasilia. It was accepted by his great grand-daughter Clara Sobral Mellac.
The conferral ceremony held on 17 November, together with other previous events were part of the celebrations being held by the UCB to mark its 36 years as an Institution for Catholic Higher Education and 15 as a University.
At present the IUS Network brings together 56 educational institutions in 20 countries in the five continents, for the most part in Latin America and in India.
