In addition to collecting funds to support various rehabilitation projects for youngsters caught up in armed conflicts, the solidarity campaign is mean to make public opinion in Italy aware of serious problem. According to the latest official report of the United Nations there are over 250,000 youngsters still caught up in armed conflicts.
The “Fondazione Don Bosco nel mondo” site is today opening a special page devoted to the problem. On it are to be found material resources - which will be added to over the next few weeks - that are informative and reflective and, for those teachers who may wish to use them, suitable for presentation in class.
The “Free a child soldier” campaign is linked to the IInd “Saints Run” which will be held in Rome on 1 November. The event which last year involved about three thousand people including athletes and members of the general public, among them the Mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno, is attempting to become with this years repeat performance the “Celebration of Educational Sport,” attracting the attention of Salesian and diocesan sports organisation in Rome and Italy.
Funds will be raised through SMS and telephone numbers which will become available just before the event, and in all the other ways indicated on the “Fondazione Don Bosco nel mondo” site.
