Democratic Republic of the Congo - A light in the darkness in Goma |
Democratic Republic of the Congo - The flames under the ashes |
The break in negotiations will certainly have repercussions on life in Goma, where the street traders had started to take up their work again contributing to an atmosphere of apparent normality in spite of the fact that peoples’ faces betray their sadness and uncertainty about their future prospects.
At the Don Bosco Centre in Goma-Ngangi there are 1,500 refugees mainly women and many children. The training and recreational activities of the Centre continue normally thanks to the efforts of the 4 Salesians, the 7 VIS volunteers and other helpers. Afternoon school has been started for the refugees, which is also aimed at creating a sense of normality.
In the Salesian health centre there are now only 5 of the 270 who were sick with cholera during the emergency of these recent weeks; the others, thanks to the treatment they received, have recovered. The local health organisation is very appreciative of the work the Salesian health centre is doing.
