The consultation involved 110 government officials and NGOs working in the sector of the young at risk with a view to consolidating an open and progressive platform to review the Juvenile Justice Act of the country, and the emerging policies. The chief guest was Justice Rohini, High Court Judge, Andhra Pradesh. She began her inspiring keynote address saying: "Children are the most important national asset and the nation depends on their proper development, physical and mental".
The decision to make the JJNW a more effective lobby group involves a website (www.jjindia.net), and a range of specific action plans. One of the more thought-provoking moments of the consultation came when one member called for a ban on the word `juvenile` itself, since it take away from the true focus - the child. All else is secondary. the Salesian Provincial of Hyderabad, Fr Noel Maddhichetty was present, along with a large contingent of Salesians from all regions of the nation. The SPCSA delegate for Youth Ministry, Fr Maria Charles and the delegate for the Young at Risk, Fr Mathew Thomas were likewise present.
