(ANS – Rome) – Changing the programme for election of the Councillors, the capitulars were gathered this afternoon in the Chapter Hall to elect the new  Economer General.

From the ballot-box in the first scrutiny, there emerged the name of Claudio Marangio, Provincial Economer of the Special Circumscription for Piedmont and the Valle d’Aosta (ICP). He is the first Salesian brother to become General Councillor.

“ I feel I don`t deserve the faith which the Chapter Assembly has placed in me, but rely on the help of Blessed Artemide Zatti”, said Marangio replying positively to the questions of the Assembly President.

Born in  Busto Arsizio, in the Province of Varese, on 17th February 1965, he is a past-pupil of the Salesian Oratory at Crocetta, Turin. After a discernment course completed at the house of “Rebaudengo”, he did his novitiate at  Pinerolo-Monteoliveto, was professed on the 8th of September 1985 as a Salesian Brother. Having done his post-novitiate of 2 years at the formation house of   San Tarcisio in Rome where he did a 2 year term of Spirituality at the Salesian Pontifical University, Marangio spent his 3 year service at the house of Foglizzo.

After that he returned to Rome, at first in the community of San Tarcisio and then at the Sacro Cuore, where he attended the faculty of Economics and Commerce getting his degree in 2002. He returned to Turin to the community of  Elledici-Leumann, taking up again the role of Administrative Director. In 2002 he became Provincial Economer.

On the 15th of April 2006 Don Chávez chose him as a member of the technical Commission of the GC26, and after that, received the invitation from the same Rector Major to take part in the Chapter.

Before posing the question of the ceremony to Marangio, Don Pascual Chávez wanted to thank Don Gianni Mazzali, Economer General who is leaving, for his two six-year terms of service to the Congregation. Besides which, he listed the great works which Don Mazzali had performed in his role as Economer General, beyond the administration of the Congregation, in the Salesian Pontifical University, the Casa Generalizia and the places where he lived and acted Don Bosco.
