1/10/2015 - India - Rector Major at Delhi Salesian Youth Expo

(ANS – New Delhi) – Youth Expo 2015 was held on 29-30 September at Don Bosco School Alaknanda. The Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime was present and there was a mammoth gathering of over 1250 youngsters from eleven provinces across the country, and many dignitaries.

Archbishop Anil Couto of Delhi presided at the Eucharist in the morning, enriched with a heavenly choir comprising boys and teachers of Don Bosco School Alakananda. Among the other dignitaries there were Frances Ngajokpa, Minister from Manipur, as Chief Guest; Shrimati Smriti Zubin Irani, who is currently the HRD minister and vice-president of the BJP and who did her schooling at Holy Child Auxillium, Vasant Vihar run by the Salesian sisters; Shri Piyush Goyal, MP, Minister of State with independent charge Power, Coal and Renewable Energy, alumnus of Don Bosco School, Matunga; his excellency most Rev Salvatore Pennacchio, the ambassador of the Vatican to India.

Shri Ngajokpa spoke of Salesian work in the country and also showed Bosconian generosity with an announcement of a donation of Rs. 1 lakh. Youth Expo was then declared open by Fr Jose Mathew, Provincial of New Delhi and Convenor of the event.

A youth talk show that reflected on the challenges and issues faced by youngsters today preceded the Bosco Fiesta – a multi-talent show with mime, music, rangoli and canvas painting competitions.

Tea was a moment to interact, mingle and get ready for the welcoming of the Rector Major and the cultural programme “BoscoUtsav”. Youngsters in traditional costumes representing the various states of India welcomed the Rector Major Fr Ángel Fernández Artime.

He was then led in procession to the stage with excited youngsters who wished to receive his blessings. The Rector Major spent time enjoying the “BoscoUtsav” that showcased the rich cultural diversity of India.

The young people from the eleven provinces of India gave a glimpse of immense talent, ability and joyous energy with their stupendous display. Feet-thumping music and dance lit up the evening, with boys and girls swaying, swinging and shining with their dazzling performances. The high enthusiasm moved many in the audience who added to the dance and celebration by joining in from the floor.

The evening ended with the Good Night of the Rector Major inviting the young people to “be partners for change, with the will and determination to make ours a better world”.
