Spain – Emergency Aid to Nepal enters second phase, with fear of Monsoons |
RMG – To alleviate the suffering of the people |
(ANS - Madrid)- The Salesian Fr Vincent Mondal, who is responsible for coordinating emergency relief goods sent from India to Nepal, had a meeting with the media yesterday, May 18, at the headquarters of the Salesian Missions Office of Madrid, to explain the current situation and what will be achieved through aid that is sent in Nepal.
The Nepalese government interference in controlling the distribution of aid and the acquisition of funds has meant that the Salesian Province of Calcutta has become the center of operations of the Salesians for the sending and distribution of relief supplies.
"Our priority is the children, they were our priority before and they are now, after the quake. The main objective is to ensure their education through our centers and to enable help, in the next three years, to the families who have lost everything, "said Fr Mondal.
The Salesian acknowledged that "the people were expecting a great earthquake, given the seismic zone on which the country lies. We had to act immediately using our funds. Then the Salesian Mission Offices, NGOs, foundations and all branches of the Salesian Family have rallied to help and support Nepal and the aid continued to arrive, and we are very grateful. "
The Salesians in Nepal also collaborates with other Church organizations, including Caritas, “to be more effective. This will multiply the efforts to reach people in need."
With 45% of the houses destroyed and many people living on the streets in makeshift tents, the Salesian admitted that "after this first phase of emergency aimed at providing basic necessities, we want to help people have shelter, to rebuild with earthquake-proof, simple homes."
Finally, although the country slowly recovers from the devastation, Don Mondal has mentioned that "no one forgets Nepal. It is a country that lives because of tourism and people should continue to visit to help this people overcome the destruction that they have suffered."
